Useful Journals for the Study of Systematic Theology
OLD TESTAMENT THEOLOGY Chisholm, Robert B. Jr. "The Polemic against Baalism in Israel's Early History and Literature." Bibliotheca Sacra 151 (1994): 267-283. This is a conservative study written at a masters or doctoral level. Harner, Philip B. "Exodus, Sinai, and Hittite Prologues." Journal of Biblical Literature 85 (1966): 233-236. This brief mainstream article is quite useful. It discusses the historical prologue element in the treaty form. The article is written at a masters or doctoral level. For the significance of the historical prologues, see Yahweh's Song. Juncker, Günther. "Christ as Angel: the Reclamation of a Primitive Title." Trinity Journal 15 (1994): 221-250. This is a generally conservative study written at a masters or doctoral level. Kaiser, Walter C. Jr. "God's Promise Plan and His Gracious Law." Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society 33 (1990): 289-302. This is a conservative study written at a masters level. Knight, Harold. "The Old Testament Conception of Miracle." Scottish Journal of Theology 5 (1952): 355-361. This is a conservative study written at a college or masters level. Mayo, Jim. "Covenant Theology in Ezekiel." Restoration Quarterly 16 (1973): 23-31. This brief study discusses covenant theology in Ezekiel. It is written at a masters level. Miller, Patrick D. Jr. "El, the Creator of Warrior." Harvard Theological Review 60 (1967): 411-431. This is a mainstream (liberal) study that is still quite interesting. It is written at a masters or doctoral level. Poythress, Vern S. "Ezra 3, Union with Christ, and Exclusive Psalmody." Westminster Theological Journal 37 (1974/75): 74-94. This is a conservative study written at a masters or doctoral level. Roberts, J. J. M. "The Davidic Origin of the Zion Tradition." Journal of Biblical Literature 92 (1973): 329-344. This is a mainstream study, and its conclusions should be reinterpreted in light of conservative presuppositions. However, it also has useful observations about the Old Testament's use of holy mountain imagery. It is written at a masters or doctoral level. Rodríguez, Angel Manuel. "Sanctuary Theology in the Book of Exodus." Andrew University Seminary Studies 24 (19867): 127-145. This is a conservative study written at a masters or doctoral level. Schurb, Ken. "Sixteenth-Century Lutheran-Calvinist Conflict on the Protevangelium." Concordia Theological Quarterly 54 (1990): 25-47. This is an interesting discussion of how two leading Protestant Reformers understood Genesis 3:15. It is written at a masters or doctoral level. NEW TESTAMENT THEOLOGY Billings, J. Todd. "United to God through Christ: Assessing Calvin on the Question of Deification." Harvard Theological Review 98 (2005): 315-334. This is not a conservative study, but it is valuable. One of the most important Christian motifs is the idea that Christ is within His people. The Eastern Orthodox world expressed this truth through the doctrine of deification. The Western church has always been skeptical about that way of expressing the doctrine. Todd argues that Calvin believed something somewhat similar although he would not express it that way. This is a masters or doctoral level study. Bruce, F. F. "Some Thoughts on the Beginning of the New Testament Canon." Bulletin of the John Rylands University Library of Manchester 65 (1982/83): 37-60. Writing from a conservative perspective, Bruce traces the evidence for how the New Testament books became accepted as a canon of Scripture. The article is written at a masters or doctoral level. Hammerton-Kelly, R. G. "The Temple and the Origins of Jewish Apocalyptic." Vetus Testamentum 20 (1970): 1-15. This is a mainstream but interesting study on the relationship between temple theology and the rise of apocalyptic with its motif of a heavenly temple. It is written at a masters or doctoral level. Jones, R. Tudor. "Union with Christ: The Existential Nerve of Puritan Piety." Tyndale Bulletin 41 (1990): 186-208. One of Paul's key themes was the idea of being united with Christ. Jones argues that this was central to puritan thought. This is a reasonably conservative study written at a masters or doctoral level. Parker, Thomas D. "The Interpretation of Scripture: I: A Comparison of Calvin and Luther on Galatians." Interpretation 17 (1963): 61-75. While rather few articles in Interpretation are very helpful for conservatives, this is a valuable study of the contrast between Calvin and Luther. It is written at a masters level. |
