The Pastor's Professional Program: Research Model

Copyright by Rodger Dalman, 2009

Brooklyn Center, MN

While the Pastor’s Professional Program offers neither academic credit nor a degree, the level of learning that it can provide can be compared to a Doctor of Ministries degree (30 Program Units). This program is written for those who already have a seminary degree.

The following courses require reading your choice of a wide selection of books. Before selecting a book, begin by checking the write up of the books either at the publishers’ web sites or at online book sources like Amazon.com. Contact information and web addresses for the book publishers and book sellers can be found at the BOOKS section of Evangelical Virtual Seminary - RESOURCE CENTER. Select books that fit your interests, your ability level, and your financial situation. For helpful advice about finding books, see the BOOKS section of the RESOURCE CENTER.

RESEARCH COURSES

CHOOSE TWO OF THE FOLLOWING ELECTIVES

The remaining courses in this section will require purchasing conference papers, masters theses or doctoral dissertations/projects from the Theological Research Exchange Network at www.tren.com. Sources posted on TREN usually represent an Evangelical perspective. Most sources at TREN can be purchased printed on paper, copied to a CD, or printed on microfiche. Sources on microfiche usually only cost $5, but they require the use of a fiche reader. Often city or county libraries will have a fiche reader that patrons can use. Used fiche readers can also often be purchased at online sources like Ebay. Sources on CD usually cost between $5 and $20. Sources printed on paper cost between $2 and $100 depending on the length of the study.

When choosing sources, it is wise to start at the TREN web site. Check the school at which each student studied. That may indicate the theological perspective from which the paper was written. Select sources that address topics of interest to you, and check sources that fit your financial limitations.

RESEARCH COMPONENT

RS 370 – RESEARCH PROJECT (9 Program Units)

For the Research component of this project, select an issue or problem that touches the life of your church like evangelism, retention of young adults, or divorce. Using the pattern suggested in one of the sources from the TREN database, plan and conduct a study of your own congregation in reference to that topic or problem. Explore options suggested in the literature for addressing the issue. Summarize the conclusions of your study, and use that summary to construct a plan to address the issue in your own congregation. Discuss the implementation of the plan with the leadership of the congregation and put it into effect if the church leadership supports it.
