Hoffmeier, James K. "Some Thoughts on Genesis 1 & 2 and Egyptian Cosmology." Journal of the Ancient Near Eastern Society 15 (1983): 39-49. Hoffmeier summarizes some of the traditional parallels that have been suggested between Genesis and Egyptian cosmology. His article is written at a masters level.

Johnston, Gordon H. "Genesis 1 and Ancient Egyptian Creation Myths." Bibliotheca Sacra 165 (2008): 178-194. This is a useful conservative study written at a masters or doctoral level.

Kikawada, Isaac M. "The Double Creation of Mankind in Enki and Ninmah, Atrahasis I 1-351, and Genesis 1-2." Iraq 45 (1983): 43-45. This is a brief mainstream study that may be important. It may offer a good explanation for why Genesis 1-3 took the form that it did. It is written at a doctoral level.

Ray, Paul J. Jr. "The Duration of the Israelite Sojourn in Egypt." Andrews University Seminary Studies 24 (1986): 231-248. This is a conservative and useful study written at a masters level.

Shea, William H. "New Light on the Exodus and on Construction of the Tabernacle: Gerster's Protosinaitic Inscription No. !." Andrews University Seminary Studies 25 (1987): 73-96. This is a conservative study that makes a very interesting suggestion. It is written at a masters or doctoral level.

Towers, John Robert. "The Red Sea." Journal of Near Eastern Studies 18 (1959): 150-153. This is a conservative and useful study written at a masters or doctoral level.

Uphill, E. P. "Pithom and Raamses: Their Location and Significance." Journal of Near Eastern Studies 27 (1968): 291-316. This is a mainstream but interesting article written at a masters or doctoral level.

Wifall, Walter. "The Sea of Reeds as Sheol." Zeitschrist für die Alttestamentliche Wissenschaft 92 (1980): 325-332. This is a mainstream but valuable study. For its significance, see Yahweh's Song.

Woudstra, Marten H. "Calvin Interprets What 'Moses Reports': Observations on Calvin's Commentary on Exodus 1-19." Calvin Theological Journal 21 (1986):  151-174. This is a conservative study written at a masters level.

Young, Edward J. "The Call of Moses." Westminster Theological Journal 29 (1966/67): 117-135. 30 (1967): 1-23. This is a conservative study written at a masters level.

Budde, K. "Imageless Worship in Antiquity." Expository Times 9 (1897/98): 396-399. This is an old but still interesting study written at a masters level.

Curtis, Edward M. "The Theological Basis for the Prohibition of Images in the Old Testament." Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society 28 (1985): 277-287. This is a conservative study written at a masters or doctoral level.

DeGuglielmo, Antonine. "Sacrifice in the Ugaritic Texts." Catholic Biblical Quarterly 17 (1955): 76-96.  This is not a conservative study, and its conclusions must be viewed with caution. However, it gives a lot of useful information about sacrifices mentioned in the Ugaritic texts. Strong claims have been made about the similarity of sacrifices at Ugarit and the Old Testament, and DeGuglielmo argues that those parallels are overstates. This is a useful masters or doctoral level study.

Greidanus, Sidney. "The Universal Dimension of Law in the Hebrew Scriptures." Studies in Religion/Sciences Religieuses 14 (1985): 39-51. This is a useful study about the law in the Old Testament written at a masters or doctoral level.

Nibbi, Alessandra. "The Lake of Reeds of the Pyramid Texts and Yam Sûph." Göttinger Miszellen 29 (1978): 95-100. This is a mainstream but valuable study written at a masters or doctoral level. For the importance of this, see Yahweh's Song.

Tawil, Hayim. "'Azazel the Prince of the Steepe: A Comparative Study." Zeitschrift für die Alttestamentliche Wissenschaft 92 (1980): 43-59. This is a mainstream study that is still valuable. It gives an analysis of the ways that the scapegoat motif has been explained in the academic orbit. It was written at a doctoral level.

Wilkinson, John. "Leprosy and Leviticus: the Problem of Description and Identification." Scottish Journal of Theology 30 (1977):153-169. This is a useful study of the nature of leprosy in Leviticus written at a masters level.

JOSHUA, JUDGES, AND RUTH

 Blake, Ian M. "Jericho (Ain Es-Sultan): Joshua's Curse and Elisha's Miracle - One Possible Explanation." Palestine Exploration Quarterly 99 (1967): 86-97.  This is a mainstream but valuable study written at a masters  level.

Craigie, P. C. "Three Ugaritic Notes on the Song of Deborah." Journal for the Study of the Old Testament 2 (1977): 33-49. This is a brief but useful doctoral level study that uses the Ugaritic to translate three passages in the Hebrew text of Judges 5.

Greenspahn, Frederick E. "An Egyptian Parallel to Judg 17:6 and 21:25." Journal of Biblical Literature 101 (1982): 129-130. This is a mainstream liberal note that makes a useful point. It is written at a masters or doctoral level.

Hauser, Alan J. "Judges 5: Parataxis in Hebrew Poetry." Journal of Biblical Literature 99 (1980): 23-41. This is a conservative study that looks at the poem in Judges 5 and the nature of Hebrew poetry. It is written at a masters or doctoral level.

Hauser, Alan J. "Unity and Diversity in Early Israel before Samuel." Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society 22.1 (1979): 289-303. This is a conservative study written at a masters or doctoral level.

Hess, Richard S. "Non-Israelite Personal Names in the Book of Joshua." Catholic Biblical Quarterly 58 (1996): 205-214. This is a mainstream but useful study. It refutes one attack that has been raised against the historical accuracy of the biblical text. It is written at a masters or doctoral level.

Hoffmeier, James K. "The Evangelical Contribution to Understanding the (Early) History of Ancient Israel in Recent Scholarship." Bulletin of Biblical Research 7 (1997): 77-89. This is a conservative study written at a masters level.

Malamat, Abraham. "Hazor 'The Head of All Those Kingdoms.'" Journal of Biblical Literature 79 (1960): 12-19. This is a mainstream but valuable study written at a masters or doctoral level.

Malamat, Abraham. "How Inferior Israelite Forces Conquered Fortified Canaanite Cities." Biblical Archaeology Review 7.2 (1982): 24-35. This is a mainstream but valuable study. It presupposes that Israel began in Palestine in the 19th Dynasty which may be problematic. It is written at a masters level.

Malamat, Abraham. "The War of Gideon and Midian: A Military Approach." Palestine Exploration Quarterly 85 (1953): 61-65. This is a brief mainstream but useful study written at a masters or doctoral level.

Niditch, Susan. "The 'Sodomite' Theme in Judges 19-20: Family, Community, and Social Disintegration." Catholic Biblical Quarterly 44.3 (1982): 365-378. This is a mainstream but useful study of hospitality in Genesis 19 and Judges 19. It is written at a masters level.

Saydon, Paul P. "The Crossing of the Jordan: Josue 3;4." Catholic Biblical Quarterly 12 (1950): 194-207. This is a very interesting study. It talks about the difference between Protestant and Roman Catholic critical thought in 1950. The Catholic world of Biblical scholarship today is much closer to the liberal Protestant position than it was half a century ago, but it interesting to see what the difference once was. It is written at a masters level.

Snyman, S. D. "Shamgar ben Anath: A Farmer Warrior or a Farmer at War?" Vetus Testamentum 55.1 (2005): 125-129. This is a mainstream but useful study. It argues that Shamgar was not an Israelite. It is written at a masters level.

Townsend, Theodore P. "The Kingdom of God as a Reality: Israel in the Time of the Judges." The Indian Journal of Theology 32 (1983): 19-36. This is a mainstream but generally conservative and useful study written at a masters level.

Van Groningen, G. "Joshua - II Kings: Deuteronomistic? Priestly? Or Prophetic Writing?" Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society 12 (1969): 3-26. This is a good conservative study written at a masters level.

Webb, Barry. "The Theme of the Jephthah Story (Judges 10:6-12:7)," The Reformed Theological Review 45 (1988): 34-43. This is a conservative study written at a masters or doctoral level.

Willis, Timothy M. "The Nature of Jephthah's Authority." Catholic Biblical Quarterly 59 (1997): 33-44. This is a mainstream but useful study written at a masters or doctoral level.

Yadin, Yigael. "Is the Biblical Account of the Israelite Conquest of Canaan Historically Reliable?" Biblical Archaeology Review 8.2 (1982): 16-23. This is a mainstream study but valuable. Yadin argued for a conquest model for Israel's origin just as Albright did before him. While this is the biblical model, Yadin dates the conquest in the 19th Dynasty instead of the 18th Dynasty. This is written at a masters level.

Yadin, Yigarl. "'And Dan, Why Did He Remain in Ships' (Judges V, 17)." Australian Journal of Biblical Archaeology 1 (1968):  9-23. This is a mainstream but valuable study written at a masters or doctoral level.

Young, Edward J. "The Alleged Secondary Deuteronomic Passages in the Book of Joshua." Evangelical Quarterly 25 (1953): 142-157. This is an important conservative study that everyone should read. It demonstrates the difficulties that stand behind a higher critical interpretation of Joshua. It is written at a masters level.

HISTORY BOOKS

Archer, Gleason L. Jr. "Old Testament History and Recent Archaeology from Solomon to Zedekiah." Bibliotheca Sacra 127 (1970): 195-211. This is a conservative study written at a masters level.

Ball, E. "The Co-Regency of David and Solomon (I Kings 1)." Vetus Testamentum 27 (1977): 268-279. This is a mainstream but useful study of the co-regency of David and Solomon. It puts this account into the broader context of co-regencies in the ancient Near East. It is written at a masters level.

Ben-Barak, Zafrira. "The Legal Background to the Restoration of Michal to David." Supplements to Vetus Testamentum 30 (1979): 15-29. This is a mainstream but very useful article written at a masters or doctoral level.

Dennison, James T. Jr. "Elijah the Tishbite: A Note on I Kings 17:1." Westminster Theological Journal 41 (1978): 124-126. This is a useful note written by a conservative author at a masters or doctoral level.

Dillard, Raymond. "The Reign of Asa (2 Chronicles 14-16): An Example of the Chronicler's Theological Method." Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society 23 (1980): 207-218. This is a good conservative study written at a masters or doctoral level.

Dubovsky, Peter. "Tiglath-pileser III's Campaigns in 734-732 B.C." Historical Background of Isa. 7; 2 Kgs 15-16 and 2 Chr 27-28." Biblica 87 (2006): 153-170. This is a mainstream but valuable study written at a masters level.

Dumbrell, William J. "The Davidic Covenant." The Reformed Review 39 (1980): 40-47. This is a conservative study written at a masters or doctoral level.

Dumbrell, William J. "The Purpose of the Books of Chronicles." Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society 27 (1984): 257-266. This is a conservative study written at a masters or doctoral level.

Edelman, Diana. "Saul's Battle against Amaleq (I Sam 15)." Journal for the Study of the Old Testament 35 (1986): 71-84. This is a mainstream but useful article written at a masters or doctoral level.

Fensham, F. Charles. "The Treaty between Solomon and Hiram and the Alalakh Tablets." Journal of Biblical Literature 79 (1960): 59-60. This brief note is written from a mainstream perspective, but it is a useful observation made at a masters or doctoral level.

Ganor, N. R. "The Lachish Letters." Palestine Exploration Quarterly 98/99 (1966/67): 74-77. This is a brief mainstream but valuable discussion of the Lachish letters from Nebuchadnezzar's attack against Judah. It is written at a masters level.

Goldingay, John. "The Chronicler as Theologian." Biblical Theology Bulletin 5 (1975): 99-126. This is a valuable conservative study of the principles used by Chronicles to record Israel's history and how those principles differed from the treatment of the same topic in Samuel and Kings. It is written at a masters or doctoral level.

Green, Alberto R. "Israelite Influence in Shishak's Court?" Bulletin of the American Schools of Oriental Research 233 (1979): 59-62. This is a mainstream but useful study written at a masters or doctoral level.

Hanks, Thomas D. "Chronicler: Theologian of Grace." Evangelical Quarterly 53 (1981): 16-28. This is a good conservative study written at a masters level.

Haran, Menahem. "The Rise and Decline of the Empire of Jeroboam  Ben Joash." Vetus Testamentum 17 (1967): 266-297. This is a mainstream but useful study written at a masters level.

Hauer, Christian E. Jr. "The Shape of Saulide Strategy." Catholic Biblical Quarterly 31 (1960: 153-167. This is a mainstream but useful article written at a masters or doctoral level.

Horn, Siegfried. "Why the Moabite Stone Was Blown in Pieces: 9th-Century B.C. Inscription Adds New Dimension to Biblical Account of Mesha's Rebellion." Biblical Archaeology Review 12.3 (1986): 50-61. This is a mainstream but useful study written at a masters or doctoral level.

Japhet, Sara. "The Historical Reliability of Chronicles: The History of the Problem and its Place in Biblical Research." Journal for the Study of the Old Testament 33 (1985): 83-107. This is a mainstream study that has little positive to say about Chronicles. It is a good summary of the process by which the mainstream academic community came to reject the historical accuracy of the Chronicles account. It is written at a masters level.

Kapelrud, Arvid S. "Temple Building, a Task for Gods and Kings." Orientalia 32 (1963): 56-62. This is a mainstream study, but it makes a few useful points. It is written at a masters or doctoral level.

Kitchen, K. A. "A Possible Mention of David in the Late Tenth Century BCE, and Deity Dod as Dead as the Dodo?" Journal for the Study of the Old Testament 76 (1997): 29-44. This is a conservative and helpful study written at a masters or doctoral level.

Blocher, Henri. "The Fear of the Lord as the 'Principle' of Wisdom." Tyndale Bulletin 28 (1977): 3-28. This is a generally conservative and valuable study of the Wisdom tradition written at a masters or doctoral level.

Clifford, Richard J. "Proverbs IX: A Suggested Ugaritic Parallel." Vetus Testamentum 25 (1975): 298-306. This is a mainstream (liberal) study that is still quite valuable. Clifford discusses Egyptian parallels to Proverbs. It is written at a masters or doctoral level.

DeJong, Stephen. "God in the Book of Qohelet: A Reappraisal of Qohelet's Place in Old Testament Theology." Vetus Testamentum 47: 154-167. This is a mainstream but useful discussion. It argues that Ecclesiastes should be placed within the broader context of the Old Testament instead of being a work that is foreign to the rest of the OT. It is written at a doctoral level.

Fritsch, Charles T. "The Gospel in the Book of Proverbs." Theology Today 7 (1950):169-183. This is a conservative paper written at a college or masters level.

Goldingay, John. "The 'Salvation History' Perspective and the 'Wisdom' Perspective within the Context of Biblical Theology." Evangelical Quarterly 51 (1979): 194-207. This is a generally conservative study that traces academic perspectives in the mainstream community that are related to the Wisdom tradition. It is written at a masters or doctoral level.

Harman, A. M. "Modern Discussion on the Song of Solomon." Reformed Theological Review 37 (1978): 65-72. This is a conservative study written at a college or masters level.

Hubbard, D. A. "The Wisdom Movement and Israel's Covenant Faith." Tyndale Bulletin 17 (1966): 3-34. This is a conservative study written at a masters or doctoral level.

Kitchen, K. A. "Proverbs and Wisdom Books of the Ancient Near East: The Factual History of a Literary Form." Tyndale Bulletin 28 (1977): 69-114. This is a solid conservative discussion of the wisdom tradition. It is written at a masters or doctoral level.

 Malchow, Bruce V. "A Manual for Future Monarchs." Catholic Biblical Quarterly 47 (1985): 238-245. This is a mainstream but interesting study. It explores the belief that Proverbs 25-29 was written during Hezekiah's reign to educate future rulers. The article is written at a masters level.

Millard, Alan R. "In Praise of Ancient Scribes." Bible and Spade 2 (1982): 33-41. This is a conservative study written at a masters or doctoral level.

Paul, Shalom M. "Unrecognized Biblical Legal Idioms in the Light of Comparative Akkadian Expressions." Revue Biblique 86.2 (1979): 231-239. This is a mainstream but useful study on the legal  used in the Wisdom literature. It is written at a masters or doctoral level.

Poythress, Vern S. "Ezra 3, Union with Christ, and Exclusive Psalmody." Westminster Theological Journal 37 (1974/75): 74-94. This is a conservative study written at a masters or doctoral level.

Ruffle, John. "The Teaching of Amenemope and its Connection with the Book of Proverbs." Tyndale Bulletin 28 (1977): 29-68. This is a generally conservative study written at a masters or doctoral level. Amenemope is the most common parallel applied to Proverbs.

Waltke, Bruce K. "The  Book of Proverbs and Ancient Wisdom Literature." Bibliotheca Sacra 136 (1979): 221-238. Waltke's studies are solid conservative papers written at a masters level.

Waltke, Bruce K. "The Book of Proverbs and Old Testament Theology." Bibliotheca Sacra 136 (1979): 302-317.

Whybray, R. N. "The Identification and Use of Quotations in Ecclesiastes." Supplements to Vetus Testamentum 32 (1981): 435-451. This is a mainstream but useful study. Whybray tries to identify quotations of wisdom texts in Ecclesiastes. It is written at a masters or doctoral level.

ISAIAH, JEREMIAH, AND EZEKIEL

Bullock, C. Hassell. "Ezekiel, Bridge between the Testaments." Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society 25.1 (1982): 24-32. This is a conservative study written at a masters level.

Dijkstra, Meindert. "Legal Irrevocability (lo' yasub ) in Ezekiel 7.13." Journal for the Study of the Old Testament 43 (1989): 109-116. While not a conservative study, this is a helpful doctoral level study of Ezekiel 7:13.

Elmen, Robertson, O. Palmer. "Genesis 15:6: New Covenant Expositions of an Old Covenant Text." Westminster Theological Journal 42 (1980): 259-289. This is a conservative study written at a masters level.

Feinburg, Charles Lee. "Jeremiah 31:22: Proverb, Promise, or Prophecy?" Bibliotheca Sacra 123 (1986): 316-325. This is a conservative study written at a masters level.

Hamlin, E. John. "The Meaning of 'Mountains and Hills' in Isa. 41:14-16." Journal of Near Eastern Studies 13 (1954): 185-190. This is not a conservative study, and its conclusions must be evaluated with care. However, it is a useful study of the significance of holy mountain imagery for the prophets. It is written at a masters or doctoral level.

King, Philip J. "Jeremiah's Polemic against Idols - What Archaeology Can Teach Us." Bible Review 10 (1994): 22-29. This is a mainstream but helpful article written at a masters level.

Malul, Meir. "Adoption of Foundlings in the Bible and Mesopotamian Documents: A Study of Some Legal Metaphors in Ezekiel 16:1-7." Journal for the Study of the Old Testament 46 (1990): 97-126. This is not a conservative study, and its conclusions should be evaluated carefully. Yet it also makes some valuable points about the Mesopotamian background of some of the motifs in Ezekiel 16:1-7. It is written at a doctoral level.

Patterson, Richard D. "Of Bookends, Hinges, and Hooks: Literary Clues to the Arrangement of Jeremiah's Prophecies." Westminster Theological Journal 51 (1989): 110-132. This is a conservative study written at a masters level.

Patton, Corrine. "'I Myself Gave Them Laws that Were Not Good': Ezekiel 20 and the Exodus Traditions." Journal for the Study of the Old Testament 69 (1996): 73-90. This is not a conservative study, and its conclusions have to be viewed with care. However, it makes some valuable points. It is written at a doctoral level.

Sarna, Nahum M. "Ezekiel 8:17: A Fresh Examination." Harvard Theological Review 57 (1964): 347-352. While not a conservative study, this is an interesting and somewhat helpful examination of Ezekiel 8:17. It is written at a doctoral level.

Unger, Merrill F. "The Temple Vision of Ezekiel-Part I." Bibliotheca Sacra 105 (1948): 419-432. This is a conservative study written at a masters level.

Woudstra, Marten H. "The Everlasting Covenant in Ezekiel 16:59-63." Calvin Theological Journal 6 (1971): 22-48. This is a conservative study written at a masters or doctoral level.

THE MINOR PROPHETS

Cathcart, Kevin J. "Treaty-Curses and the Book of Nahum." Catholic Biblical Quarterly 35 (1973): 179-187. This is a mainstream but useful study. It traces covenant or treaty curses in Nahum. The treaty curses are a basic motif in the prophets. For the significance, see Yahweh's Song. The article is written at a masters or doctoral level.

Dumbrell, W. J. "Malachi and the Ezra-Nehemiah Reforms." Reformed Theological Review 35 (1976): 42-52. This is a generally conservative study written at a masters level.

Dumbrell, W. J. "Kingship and Temple in the Post-Exilic Period." Reformed Theological Review 37 (1978): 33-42. This is a generally conservative study written at a masters level.

Garrett, Duane A. "The Structure of Amos as a Testimony to its Integrity." Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society 27 (1984): 275-276. This is a conservative study written at a masters level.

Mackay, Cameron. "Zechariah in Relation to Ezekiel 40-48." Evangelical Quarterly 40 (1968): 197-210. This is a conservative study written at a masters level.
